The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender is partly the story of Ava, a winged girl born in Seattle in 1944 and raised in seclusion by a heartbroken mother, but also that of three generations of her family, a tale of matriarchs and magical realism.

Written in a lyrical, fairytale style this book will draw readers into its world quickly. It is not always a happy read, but it remains hopeful throughout and the magic of the family is weaved seamlessly into the normal world around them. Full of memorable characters, this story will stay with the reader long after they’ve finished reading.

An intriguing debut by an author to keep an eye on.
