I fell in love with the title of this book, and fell even deeper in love with it from page 1. It’s quiet, achingly sweet and melancholy and I was heartbroken when I finished it. A story of four friends whose lives have taken them so far apart that their friendships in many ways no longer make sense, but are utterly essential to their sense of self, the family they choose for themselves and are reluctant to part with. The farmer, the country music star, the financial whiz, the injured rodeo cowboy, the book is full of the creeping Wisconsin cold, and the bitterness and warmth of old friendships and old secrets. A top contender for my book of 2014.
