season to taste How do you dispose of a body? Do you bury it in the garden? Do you hide it in a far-away place? This, I hasten to add, is not something I’ve ever had to do, but in ‘Season to Taste or How to Eat Your Husband’ author Natalie Young provides a method that you may find perhaps just a little hard to digest (sorry!).
It starts with a smell – it starts with a body in a freezer chopped up into sixteen different pieces – what follows is a step-by-step culinary guide to cannibalism, full of recipes that you won’t find in the latest Jamie Oliver or Mary Berry cookbook.
‘Season to Taste or How to Eat Your Husband’ tells the tale of fifty-something bored housewife Lizzie Prain as she eats her way through her recently murdered husband, all the while making sure she doesn’t get caught as she plans her new life in Glasgow (a city, it is worth mentioning, that was recently hailed as the most vegan-friendly place in Britain).
Although it sounds like a morbid video-nasty, Natalie Young’s novel is packed with macabre dark-humour, which has more in common with Roald Dahl than say ‘Cannibal Holocaust’. ‘Season to Taste or How to Eat Your Husband’ is more than just a gruesome tale of murder, it explores themes such as loveless marriages, feminism, and suburban boredom told with a cruel wit that keeps the reader engrossed.
