The FlamethrowersThis is a novel to savour as Kushner builds up her story and pulls the thread of the plot together. The novel opens at WWI and spans over 60 years telling the story of Reno who is a tough cookie and a motorcycle rider. Soon after crashing in a race to break the land speed record Reno moves to New York in the mid 70’s where she struggles to find friends. One night hooking up with Sandro Valera she begins a journey which will take her to his wealthy family and left wing revolutionaries.
This beautiful story has it all, art, sex, violence, ideological theories, fascism and colonialism, what more can a reader want from a hugely ambitious and captivating novel.
