People always give me a funny look when I tell them this is one of my favourite books. Of course, this means they haven’t read Burgess’ masterpiece of youth, violence, sex and Beethoven. A pulp nastiness mixed with a lexicon of sporadic Russian slang makes A Clockwork Orange a compelling read. Protagonist and narrator Alex is a vicious, uncontrollable teenager whose drug fuelled nights of “ultraviolence”, “tolchocking” and other unspeakable things lead him into jail and Orwellian like rehabilitation.
